TropeMate Tips & Tricks

Welcome to TropeMate — a reading platform built for romance fans who want more than just a story. Every free novelette comes with adjustable love scene intensity, characters you can actually talk to, and a personal reading list to track what you want to read next. This guide walks you through all of it.

Step 1: Browse & Read for Free

Every novelette on TropeMate is completely free to start. Head to the Library from the top navigation and browse by genre, trope, or heat level. When you find something you like, hit Read to open it in the e-reader. All chapters are unlocked — no gates, no cliffhangers held hostage behind a paywall.

Step 2: Use the Spice Editor to Dial Your Heat Level

One of TropeMate's most unique features is the Spice Editor — a panel built right into the e-reader that lets you control how explicit love scenes are, without changing anything else about the story.

Look for the 🌶 tab on the right edge of the screen while you're reading. Tap or click it to open the Spice drawer, then choose your preferred level:

  • 🌶 Fade to Black — love scenes are implied, nothing explicit
  • 🌶🌶 Warm — romantic and sensual, but tasteful
  • 🌶🌶🌶 Sensual — chemistry and tension, moderately detailed
  • 🌶🌶🌶🌶 Spicy — detailed and adult
  • 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 Scorching — fully explicit, no fade

Your spice level applies instantly to every scene in the current novelette. If you're signed in, your preference is saved automatically across sessions. If you're reading as a guest, it's saved in your browser until you clear it.

Tip: Not all novelettes have spice-variant scenes yet — look for the 🌶 tab on the right side of the reader to know when the feature is available.

Step 3: Chat with Characters in the E-Reader

Every novelette is connected to at least one Trope Mate — an AI character you can talk to while you read. Want to ask a character how they really felt in chapter two? Go ahead. Want to continue the story past where it ended? They'll play along.

To open character chat, look for the Talk to [Character Name] button in the top bar of the e-reader. This opens a chat panel on the right side of the screen where you can have a full conversation without leaving the story.

Character chat uses credits. You get a starting balance when you create a free account, and you can top up or subscribe to get more. An average message exchange costs a fraction of a credit — so your balance goes a long way.

Tip: The character knows what chapter you're on, so you can reference specific moments and they'll understand the context.

Step 4: Meet All the Trope Mates

Beyond the e-reader, you can browse and chat with all available Trope Mates from the Trope Mates page in the top navigation. Each character has their own personality, backstory, and genre. Filter by genre or trope to find someone who fits your mood, then jump straight into a conversation.

Subscribers get access to all Trope Mates with no restrictions. Free accounts can explore a selection of characters to try the experience before committing.

Step 5: Build Your TBR List

Found a novelette you want to come back to? Add it to your To Be Read (TBR) list with one click. Look for the Add to TBR button on any book in the library or on the book's detail page.

Your TBR list lives in your My Account panel (top right, when signed in). From there you can:

  • See all the books you've saved
  • Jump straight into reading
  • Remove titles once you've read them
  • Track your reading history over time

Tip: The TBR list is a great way to bookmark titles when you're browsing and don't have time to read right now.

Step 6: Access Your Saved Chats

Every conversation you have with a Trope Mate is automatically saved to your account. Head to My Account → My Chats to see your full history. You can pick up any conversation right where you left off, or review past exchanges whenever you like.

Step 7: Export Your Chats

If you've written something you want to keep — a branching story, a particularly good roleplay scene, a conversation you want to re-read — you can export it as a PDF, TXT, or DOCX file from your chat history. Perfect for saving your favorites or sharing them (privately) with a friend.

Understanding Credits

Reading novelettes is always free. Credits are used for character chat — each message you send and receive draws from your balance. Here's a rough guide:

  • A short back-and-forth exchange: ~500–1,000 credits
  • A longer, detailed message: ~2,000–3,000 credits
  • A full chapter co-written with a character: ~5,000–8,000 credits

You can check your current balance in the top right corner of any page when you're signed in. If you run low, top up anytime from the Pricing page — no subscription required for credit top-ups.

Subscribers get a large monthly or annual credit allocation plus access to all Trope Mates, which is the best value if you chat regularly.
